Did I say that the engine blow up over the weekend, well had to have magor work to it.

Nikonians Photo Professors launch first Podcast

Nikon photo enthusiasts looking for a series of free podcasts designed to enhance their image making skills have a new "must listen" resource. The first podcast in the new Nikonians Photo Professors podcast series debuts this week, hosted by Rick Paul and Rick Hulbert.

Their free podcast is ready for direct download and it is also available in the podcast section of the Apple iTunes store (also free).

Nikonians Photo Professors Rick Paul and Rick Hulbert combine 60 years of professional and successful photography experience in the newest podcast series available through nikonians.org starting January 15th.

Rick Paul has supplemented his 25-year career as an Aerospace Engineer by creating and developing a successful wedding photography and portrait photography business in addition to his success as a stock photographer. Rick has honed his instructional skills teaching photography skills to company factory workers.

Rick Hulbert has leveraged his 35-year background in architecture and urban design as a springboard for his current activities as an instructor and lecturer and workshop leader in the areas of architectural, travel, street and urban photography.

The Nikonians Photo Professors credit Jason Odell and Rick Walker, longtime podcast veterans of more than 150 Nikonians Image Doctors episodes for their inaugural work in generating interest in the field of photography-oriented podcasts. While preparing for the debut episode they consulted with Jason Odell and arranged to book him as their first guest.

The professors pay homage to the Nikonians motto: Share, Learn, Inspire by structuring the podcast format to those three elements.

Each monthly episode will share information on new gear, assist in learning with the help of special guests and inspire creative techniques with an emphasis on basics (meaning no need for purchasing new equipment).

If you have any questions, suggestions or comments to share with the Nikonians Photo Professors you can email them as a team at info@photoprofessors.org
and individually at rickpaul@photoprofessors.org or rickhulbert@photoprofessors.org.

You can follow podcast show notes and background information at the Nikonians Photo Professors blog page.

Good Luck Rick and Paul, Mark

Nikon WT-5 with D4 DSLR

One of the most interesting new functions of the new Nikon D4 is the ability to remotely and wirelessly control the camera using its web interface.

While the Nikon D2 and D3 both allowed wireless transmission of images, the D4 has improved on this, allowing the user to control the camera via Nikon's WT-5 wireless transmitter, which attachs to the side of the camera drawing power from the camera, then connects via any Wi-Fi network.

Once you are connected to a local area network you can use any web browser to access the camera’s built-in web interface. The power of the interface is incredible, it gives you a live-view from the camera and you can use it to remotely change any of the camera’s key functions, like setting aperture or shutter priority, change white balance and ISO, click to autofocus and of course take still shots. You can review pictures and even switch over to video mode with a similar level of control.

Nikon D4 Spec

There has been some creditable news in the photographic industry about the upcoming Nikon D4 camera, here is my pickings are what I think Nikon's D4 may be like;

  • 16.2 MP

  • 11 fps

  • 100-102,400 native ISO range, expandable to 50 and 204,800

  • CF + XQD memory card slots

  • No built-in wireless as Nikon have are sticking with the wireless transmitters, WT-5

  • Ethernet port

  • Face detection

  • Video 1080p and 720p

  • Improved 51 AF points

  • AF detection range will go down to EV-2.0 (D3s went to EV -1)

  • Autofocus system: 9 cross-type sensors that are operational up to f/8

Reading the news, it's clear that Nikon are competing with Canon's 1Dx and would expect Nikon to announce the D4 and D800 just before or during the PMA show in Las Vegas (10th to 13th January, 2012).

I would agree with some reports, that Nikon are with the D4 and D800, manufacturing two pro camera bodies, with clear differences, the D4 will have low MP count, high fps, high ISO, where the D800 will have high MP count, low fps, lower ISO. This is a clear change in direction for Nikon, from the previous models D3 andD700 that shared technology with similar specs.

I have always thought that Nikon would have to go a long way to improve on the D3s and while the D4 looks interesting, is the cost of around £4000 worth the extra functionality?

What's the Difference? D4 v D3s

I have been looking very hard at the D4 specs over the past 3 days and two things, that Nikon D3s user may not have considered, is the upgrade price? We we lucky with the D2 to D3 and D3s that Nikon used the same battery, although the D3 was a higher capacity battery.

With the D4 however that batterand charger is different. The D4 uses Nikjon EN-EL18, a less poweraful battery that the D3s, which retails for around £xxx or US$xxx where the D3s uses the EN-EL4a costing around £xxx or US$xxx. The same applies to the charger, thats new, D4's is the MH-26 £xxx or US$xxx and D3s being MH-22, £xxx or US$xxx.

Below are some quick comparison between the Nikon D4 and Nikon D3s which are based on the specifications listed on Nikon websites, correct as of 7th January 2011.

  • 3 - Exposure compensation required when used with AI 28-85mm f/3.5-4.5, AI 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5, AI 35-135mm f/3.5-4.5, or AF-S 80-200mm f/2.8D.

  • 5 - With maximum aperture of f/5.6 or faster.

  • 6 - Can not be used with shifting or tilting.

  • 7 - With maximum effective aperture of f/5.6 or faster.

  • 8 - If maximum aperture is specified using Non-CPU lens data, aperture value will be displayed in viewfinder and top control panel.

  • 9 - Can be used in manual exposure modes at shutter speeds slower than flash sync speed by one step or more.

  • 10 - Exposure determined by presetting lens aperture. In aperture-priority auto exposure mode, preset aperture using lens aperture ring before performing AE lock and shifting lens. In manual exposure mode, preset aperture using lens aperture ring and determine exposure before shifting lens.

  • 11 - Use preset aperture. In aperture-priority auto exposure mode, set aperture using focusing attachment before determining exposure and taking photograph.

  • 12 - Can be used only if lens focal length and maximum aperture are specified using Non-CPU lens data. Use spot or center-weighted metering if desired results are not achieved.

  • 13 - For improved precision, specify lens focal length and maximum aperture using Non-CPU lens data.

  • Reprocopy Outfit PF-4 requires Camera Holder PA-4.

  • Noise in the form of lines may appear during autofocus at high ISO sensitivities. Use manual focus or focus lock. Lines may also appear at high ISO sensitivities when aperture is adjusted during movie recording or live view photography.
